The Good Or The Moral Element (4)

In addressing the Prophet himself after having enumerated the divine messengers, his predecessors, God says: “They are those whom Allâh has guided so follow their guidance”! (VI, 90). In fact, we do not find any moral precept reported by the Qur’an, as being taught by such Prophet or such sage, which was not retaken by it somewhere else as a duty for the Muslim community.

Do you want to see the moral laws of Moses and those of Jesus as they were pronounced in the Holy Bible? You will find them preciously preserved in the Qur’an. Certainly not given as a whole as they are in the Decalogue or in the Sermon on the Mountain, but spread out in various surahs, mekkan and medinian, and mostly each of them manifested as a sentence destined to judge a particular situation.

Besides the Sabbath which considered by the Qur’an as a local and conditioned duty, here are the Ten Decalogue Commandments.

The Bible (Exodus 20)

The Qur’an

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Between Others ... worship none but Him” (XVII, 23).

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image

“...So shun the abomination (worshipping) of idol” (XXII, 30).

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain

And make not Allâh (Name) an excuse in your oaths against your doing good.... (II, 224); “Allâh will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oath.” (V,89)

Honour thy father and thy mother

“... you worship none but Him and that you be dutiful to your parents  ...” (XVII, 23)

Thou shalt not kill

“.. And do not kill yourselves (not kill one another).” (IV,29)

Thou shalt not commit adultery

“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts...* And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking forbidden things) and to protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent etc.” (XXIV, 30-1).

Thou shalt not steal

And (as for) the male thief and the female thief, cut off (from the wrist joint) their (right ) hands as a recompense for that which they committed, a punishment by way of example from Allâh.” (V, 38); “O Prophet! When believing women come to you to give the Bai‘ah (pledge), that they will not associate anything in worship with Allâh, that they will not steal ...” (LX, 12)

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour

“... and shun lying speech (false statement)” (XXII, 30).

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house... nor anything that is thy neighbour’s

“And wish not for the things in which Allâh has made some of you to excel others...” (IV, 32).
