Question

I am suffering from social phobia since I was 15 years old, and after the age of 26, I went to a psychiatrist and described the case to him; and he gave me (alprazolam - 0.25 mg) one time in the morning and one in the evening. My condition got better by 90% so I stopped the treatment, and after the passage of two years the disease came back by 5%, should I use the treatment again?

Answer

Dear brother:

As-Salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah (May Allah's Peace and Mercy be upon you)

Welcome to Alukah Website.

The drug you mentioned is very good in stopping the symptoms of anxiety associated with social phobia quickly, but its problem is that it causes addiction if it is used for a long time and continuously, and it is difficult to quit afterwards.

My opinion is to use the medication sporadically and only at need. Be keen not to use it much, and it is good in your condition that you know your medicine and you can control yourself and deal with it.

On the other hand, I hope that you face these symptoms by training yourself to control them by relax and changing self-talks i.e., using the techniques of psychological treatment. Moreover, you can find many articles speaking about these symptoms and their treatment on the Internet.

The use of this drug especially in simple symptoms is not desirable because it may cause disability in your social skills and may affect the growth of your abilities in confronting difficulties although I do not mind that you use it as an auxiliary means in your case.

Accept my greetings and welcome again to Alukah.
