Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!).

May Allah reward you the best for all you present and may Allah add it to your scale of good deeds. I shall put my problem relating to fear of the future to discussion, but first I want to give you information about me that may benefit in the consultation: I am a female student in the final year in college and I am the eldest of my brethren. I have a younger sister and an elder brother. I suffered a case of depression which my doctor classified as a periodical depression that comes once every year. I have suffered that condition 6 years ago and I was cured of it in the last year, thanks to Allah, I got rid of that case and I am sure that it will not come back again by the will of Allah.

As for the problem, it has started two months ago which is: I extremely fear the future, I do not imagine myself married, I do not imagine myself graduated, and I do not imagine myself after several years. However, I am fully convinced that they are bullshits and negative thinking, but as soon as thinking about them I have a state of extreme fear and worry. I have projects to achieve, but I fear to die in this age, I fear to achieve nothing, and I fear that I lose my friends and my family. I always think that worldly life will end soon and I get depressed as soon as I hear sad news whether on TV or anywhere else.

Two years ago I became so close to one of my friends whom I consider like a sister or in other words like my twin, and I try to convince myself not to get close to her more for fear of losing her. I started to think that I shall die in this young age and I will not enjoy life. When I laugh, I grieve thereafter directly because I think that I will not live long and I always repeat that a person feels death if it approached. When I think about my future and what I am going to do after graduation, I speak sadly about it and whenever I tried to enjoy something, this idea pops up to confuse my mind.

Do you advise me to see a doctor or I can get rid of that problem with my own? Thank you.

Answer

Dear sister,

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!).

I have read your message concernedly and I understand your feelings well. It is obvious that these symptoms refer to a psychological disturbance comes in the form of general worry along with depressive symptoms.

From the distinctive matters here is the presence of obsessions and repeated ideas that bear the significance of fear, worry of the future, or the presence of physical symptoms or fear for others. These symptoms will vanish by the will of Allah with the cure that was described for you.

You did not mention how is your sleep and apatite which are important matters in deciding the cure.

I believe that consulting a doctor again will be very useful. Moreover, you have to make sure that there is no shortage in the thyroid gland or over-excretion because this may accompany the increase of fear or worry.

I am sure that hastening to seek cure shall be useful, especially, while you are heading to an important stage in your life such as graduation from the university and receiving the after college world, so, you shall not be secure against these pressures.

I wish you good luck and you are always welcome.
