Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)

I have a problem that caused me an acute depression. That problem is repeated five times a day. When I go to the masjid, there is a group of bad boys who ridicule me whenever I go to the masjid.

I cannot face them because of their large number and I do not want to embarrass myself by fighting them.

There are two ways to the masjid but the other way is longer than the way in which I walk. Secondly, I prefer that way because my friends love to follow.

As for the reason of their mockery, it is because of my thinness where my weight is 60 kg., and I am 183 cm tall.

I suffer depression attacks from time to time because of these children no matter how happy I am; could you kindly tell me what to do?

Answer

Dear valued brother, As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)

We thank you for your communication with us and for putting your trust in Alukah Network.

A friend is either good or bad, this is the condition of the world and the condition of people. What is needed is that a person should know how to deal with all these types.

It was reported in the Prophetic Hadith a fine description to those two types. Abu Musa Al Ash`ary (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof." [Reported by Al Bukhari and Muslim].

From this Hadith we benefit that it is a must to befriend many good friends and keep away from bad companions.

The type you see on your way to the masjid is a bad one, so do not sit with them or mix with them, and search for another way that does not pass by them which already exists according to your description.

If you feel shy to tell your friends, tell them that the way contains bad people and you do not like to pass by them and you have to choose another way.

I think this is the safest way and the quickest solution to your problem because if you leave it without solution, perhaps depression increases and perhaps you refuse to go to the masjid.

We ask Allah to protect you from evil and its people. Allah is the One who guides!
