In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

I have asked people in many places, in assemblies and work places, a question that was repeatedly asked in primary school, especially in history: Mention the names of the ten people who were given glad tiding with paradise among the Companions.

Some people would mention the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs and stop, some may mention one or two more Companions, some would mention the names of Companions who are not among the ten until nine persons were mentioned and there was only one left, who would be? He was the honorable Companion Sa`id ibn Zayd. Brother and sister, do you know who was Sa`id ibn Zayd?

His lineage (may Allah be pleased with him):

Sa`id ibn Zayd ibn `Amr ibn Nufayl ibn `Abdul-`Uzza ibn Riyah ibn Qirt ibn Razah ibn `Ady ibn Ka`b ibn Lu'ay ibn Ghalib, Abu Al A`war, Al Qurashy, Al `Adawy. His mother was Fatimah bint Ba`jah ibn Malih Al Khuza`iyyah.

He was one of the first companions who entered Islam. He became a Muslim before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would enter Al Arqam's House from the cousins of `Umar ibn Al Khattab. Al Khattab was the father of `Umar and `Amr ibn Nufayl who were paternal-brothers.

His father Zayd ibn `Umar ibn Nufayl was seeking the religion of Abraham (Peace be upon him) before the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent as a messenger. Of his news is that during the Pre-Islamic Period, he and Waraqah ibn Nawfal travelled to seek the religion of Abraham and met the Jews.

Thereupon, the Jews offered them their religion, so Waraqah became a Jew. Then they met the Christians who offered them their religion, thereupon Waraqah left Judaism and adopted Christianity, but Zayd ibn `Amr refused to adopt anything and said: Your religion is like the religion of our people who are polytheists like you.

The only difference is you have a revealed book from Allah but they have no revelation. A monk said to him: You are seeking a religion which no longer exists; He asked: What is it? He said: Abraham's religion. He said: What was the religion of Abraham? He said: He was worshiping Allah and does not associate anything with him in worship and offered Salah toward the direction of Al Ka`bah. Since then, Zayd adopted the religion of Abraham until he died and did not slaughter for idols and did not eat dead animals or drink blood.

He was the husband of `Umar's sister (Fatimah). He migrated and attended the Battle of Uhud and all other battles. He was not to Medina during the Battle of Badr, therefore, he did not attend that battle, however the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave him his share of the booty.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood between him and Ubay ibn Ka`b in Medina. It was reported in the Sunnah on the authority of `Abdur-Rahman ibn `Awf that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Abu Bakr will enter Paradise, `Umar will enter Paradise, `Uthman will enter Paradise, Ali will enter Paradise, Talhah will enter Paradise, Az-Zubayr will enter Paradise, `Abdur-Rahman ibn `Awf will enter Paradise, Sa`d ibn Abu Waqqas will enter Paradise, Sa`id ibn Zayd will enter Paradise, and Abu `Ubaydah ibn Al Jarrah will enter Paradise."

After the Messenger (peace be upon him) had passed away, he witnessed Al Yarmouk and the opening of Damascus for Islam, as a result Abu `Ubaydah ibn Al Jarrah appointed him as a ruler over Damascus and became the first Muslim to assign a deputy in Damascus.

Sa`id (may Allah be pleased with him) used to have answered supplications. Arwa bint Uways raised a complaint against him before Marwan ibn Al Hakam who was the emir of the Medina under the rule of Mu`awiyah. She said: He has taken my land. So, Marwan summoned him. Sa`id said: "Do you think that I would oppress that woman after I had heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever usurped a hand span of the earth, he would be encircled with it on the Day of Recompense from Seven layers of the earth." O Allah, if she was a lair, do not let her die until she becomes blind and cause her to die in her well." His supplication was answered and she became blind before her death and while she was walking in her house yard, she fell in her well and was buried therein.

Sa`id ibn Jubayr (may Allah be merciful with him) said: Abu Bakr, `Umar, `Uthman, Ali, Talhah, Az-Zubayr, Sa`d, `Abdur-Rahman ibn `Awf, and Sa`id ibn Zayd headed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in the battlefield and were behind him in Salah.

He passed away in Al `Aqiq in 50 or 51 AH at the age of several and seventy years old, and it was said that he passed away in 58 AH. He was carried to Al Madinah (Medina) on people's necks, Sa`d ibn Abu Waqqas and Ibn `Umar washed him, and `Abdullah ibn `Umar ibn Al Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) offered the funeral Salah on him.

This is a short biography about him. I hope everyone reads these information would refer to the books of biography for more information about his virtues. I also hope that specialists would highlight that character along with the other ten persons who were given glad tidings of Paradise because they are the major Companions and the helpers of our honorable Prophet (peace be upon him).
