The Resurrection (4)

Is there another blow other than this blow that will bring death to some of the people?

The answer: yes –may Allah make your ending good. There is another blow that people will be resurrected from for the Lord of the Worlds and that is: the blow of resurrection.

Know that –may Allah have mercy on you; the people of knowledge have differed regarding the number of blows. To you there is the discussion:

 The people of knowledge differed regarding the number of blows based on two sayings:

The first saying: as for two blows: a blow that shocks the people so they die and another that resurrects them from their graves, so there are two blows: the blow of the shock and the blow of the resurrection.

They proved this with:

A.His words Allah Almighty:

{مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ * فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَوْصِيَةً وَلَا إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِمْ يَرْجِعُونَ * وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُم مِّنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنسِلُونَ}

“They do not await except one blast which will seize them while they are disputing. And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return. And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.” [Yasin: 49-51]

The face of the evidence: in the verse there are only two blows. The first: the blow of shock. That is in His words:

{ مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ}

“They do not await except one blast which will seize them while they are disputing.” [Yasin: 49]

The second are in His words:

{وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُم مِّنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنسِلُونَ}

“And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.” [Yasin: 51]

This is the blow of the resurrection.

B.The Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) (said): “Between the two blowings of the trumpet (there would be an interval of forty). They said: Abu Huraira, do you mean forty days? He said: I cannot say anything. They said: Do you mean forty months? He said: I cannot say anything.”[1]

The position of the witness: “Between the two blowings” This proves that they are only two blows. Al Qurtubi[2] and Ibn Hajar[3] (may Allah be pleased with them) agree with this saying.

 The second saying: that they are 3 blows: the blow of panic, the blow of shock and the blow of the resurrection.

 They said: the blow of panic is the one that causes people to panic from it, then the blow of shock so they die and then the blow of resurrection comes after that.

 The proofs that they gave: His words Almighty:

{ وَيَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَفَزِعَ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ وَكُلٌّ أَتَوْهُ دَاخِرِينَ }

“And [warn of] the Day the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified except whom Allah wills. And all will come to Him humbled.” [Al Naml: 87]

They say that this is the blow of panic.

And His words Almighty:

{ وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۖ ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فِيهِ أُخْرَىٰ فَإِذَا هُمْ قِيَامٌ يَنظُرُونَ}

“And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.” [Al Zumar: 68]

In this verse there are two blows, the blow of the shock and the blow of the resurrection and the total number of blows are 3.

The ones who chose this view are Ibn Al Arabi, Ibn Taymiyya[4], Ibn Katheer[5] and Al Safarini[6] (may Allah be pleased with them all).

 The response of the ones with the first opinion: it does not stop the first blow, the blow of shock, to create panic. It is not one continuous blow. This is the reply to the first verse.

 Ibn Hajar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “it is not necessary that the constant shock (causes) panic and that they cannot both happen together from the first blow.”[7]

 Al Qurtubi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “the blow of panic is the blow of shock because the two are essential for it –i.e.: they were so panicked that they died from it (shock).”[8]

Benefit:Ibn Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) went as far as saying that the number of blows are 4: the blow of death, the blow of resurrection and then the blows of panic and shock. They shock those who have fainted from them and then awaken them from that shock.[9]
