The Gathering (3)

How will the creation be resurrected on that day?

I have been asked about a great issue, a rough and terrible position. What a moment it is and what a situation it is.

People will be resurrected naked, no clothes on them like the day that their mothers gave birth to them, barefoot with no slippers on them and uncircumcised.

Proof to that: the Hadith of `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them). She said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: “The people will be gathered barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised." I said, "O Allah's Messenger! Will the men and the women look at each other?" He said, "The situation will be too hard for them to pay attention to that.”[1]

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “You will be gathered (on the Day of Judgment), Hufa, U’ra and Ghuzla.” He then recited:

{كَمَا بَدَأْنَا أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍ نُعِيدُهُ وَعْدًا عَلَيْنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ}

“As We began the first creation, We, shall repeat it: A Promise We have undertaken: Truly we shall do it.”

The first to be dressed on the Day of Resurrection, will be Abraham.”[2]

The Hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) proves that the people will be resurrected naked and that the first to be clothed will be Ibrahim (peace be upon him). There is discrepancy on the wisdom behind that.

Ibn Hajar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “it is said: the wisdom behind Ibrahim being the first to be clothed: he was stripped when he was thrown in the fire. It is said: because he was the first to cover himself by trousers. It is said: there was none who was more afraid of Allah than him. Covering was made as a protection for him so that his heart would be comforted. This is the opinion of Al Haleesi and the first opinion is of Al Qurtubi.[3]

The first who is covered is Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and then the (other) people after that. The righteous will be covered with generous clothes that suit their situations and the sinners will be made to wear trousers of tar, war armour and other (than that) from clothes that suit their condition.

 In Sahih Muslim, Abu Musa Al Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him) (narrated) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “If the woman who wails does not repent before she dies, she will be raised on the Day of Resurrection wearing pants of tar and a chemise of scabs.”[4]

Note: what was mentioned was that people will be resurrected barefoot, naked and uncircumcised. What came in some narrations was that everyone will be resurrected in the clothes in which they died. This is inconsistent with what was mentioned regarding what was narrated by Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban and Al Hakim about Abu Sa`id Al Khudri: “that when death came to him, he asked for new clothes so he wore them. He said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: “A deceased will be raised in the clothes in which he died.”[5]

Al Baihaqi (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered 3 views between this discripency:

The first: that their clothes get worn away after they are resurrected from their graves so if they come to the stance, they are naked and then they are made to wear clothes from Paradise

The second: that they are naked then the Prophets are clothed, the companions and then people based on their levels so that the covering of every person is based on what they died upon and then they made to enter Paradise wearing the clothes of Paradise.

The third: that they are naked. As for the the clothes mentioned in the Hadith of Abu Sa`id (may Allah be pleased with him); what are meant by them are the deeds, meaning: they are resurrected on the deeds that they died upon from good or bad. Allah Almighty has said:

{وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوَىَ ذَلِكَ خَيْر}

“But the clothing of righteousness - that is best” [Al Araaf: 26]

And He said:

{وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ }

“And your clothing purify” [Al Muddathir: 4]

Meaning: purify your deeds from polytheism and the like. In this there proof that deeds are called: clothes.

Witnessing this as well: the Hadith of Ibn Omar (may Allah be pleased with them) in the two Sahih. He said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: “If Allah sends punishment upon a nation then it befalls upon the whole population indiscriminately and then they will be resurrected (and judged) according to their deeds”[6]. In this there is proof that they are resurrected on their deeds, which are their clothes. (This is) based on this collection (the two Sahih) and is proven by other evidence[7]

With what we have mentioned regarding the condition of the bodies on that day, it is suitable to mention the descriptions of the people as a whole on that terrible day. So pondor:

-The bodies: barefoot, naked and uncircumcised. That was explained earlier.

-The faces: Allah Almighty says:

{وَعَنَتِ الْوُجُوهُ لِلْحَيِّ الْقَيُّومِ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْماً}

“And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice.” [Taha: 111]

Meaning: made to be subservient.

-The eyes: Allah Almighty says:

{ خُشَّعاً أَبْصَارُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ }

“Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading” [Al Qamar: 7]

And His words Almighty:

{فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ}

“So when vision is dazzled” [Al Qiyama: 7]

Meaning: their eyes became panicked and got frightened of the horrors

-The hearts: His words Almighty:

{قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ}

“Hearts, that Day, will tremble” [Al Naziat: 8]

Meaning: panicked and their beats become faster.

-Relationships are forgotten:

{فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَلَا أَنسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلَا يَتَسَاءلُونَ}

“So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.” [Al Mumenoon: 101]

-Kneeling down on their knees:

{وَتَرَى كُلَّ أُمَّةٍ جَاثِيَةً كُلُّ أُمَّةٍ تُدْعَى إِلَى كِتَابِهَا الْيَوْمَ تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ}

“And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do.” [Al Jathiya: 28]

-None of their matters are hidden from Allah Almighty:

{يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَى مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ}

“That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.” [Al Haaqah: 18]

What was hidden and any secrets will be visible on that day. The Almighty said:

{يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ}

“The Day when secrets will be put on trial” [Al Tariq: 9]

-They are assembled in a row in front of Allah Almighty:

{وَعُرِضُوا عَلَى رَبِّكَ صَفّاً لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَلَّن نَّجْعَلَ لَكُم مَّوْعِداً}

“And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], "You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment.” [Al Kahf: 48]

-They do not speak:

{ وَخَشَعَت الْأَصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمَنِ فَلَا تَسْمَعُ إِلَّا هَمْساً}

“That Day, everyone will follow [the call of] the Caller [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].” [Taha: 108]

And the Almighty said:

{هَذَا يَوْمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ}

“This is a Day they will not speak” [Al Mursalat: 35]

If it is said: how will we be gathered between them if they do not speak, the verses prove that they speak such as His words Almighty:

{يَقُولُ الْإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ }

“Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?” [Al Qiyama: 10]

The answer is from two sides:

The first: that the Day of Resurrection is a long day so in one its moments they will speak and in others they are silent.

The second: in principle they do not speak except for whom the Merciful, His Glory and Majesty, speaks to. The Almighty said:

{يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفّاً لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرحْمَنُ وَقَالَ صَوَاباً}

“The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.” [Al Naba: 38]

-People are in stupor, fear and panic. Everyone is busy with themselves: so people flee from the people closest to them. The Almighty said:

{يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ * وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ** وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ }

“On the Day a man will flee from his brother. And his mother and his father. And his wife and his children” [Abasa: 34, 35 and 36]

 (The situation) is so extreme that the breastfeeding (woman) is shocked of her infant.

The pregnant (woman) is (shocked) of her featus, if it was destined that there would be pregnancy and breastfeeding. Allah Almighty says:

{يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ السَّاعَةِ شَيْءٌ عَظِيمٌ * يَوْمَ تَرَوْنَهَا تَذْهَلُ كُلُّ مُرْضِعَةٍ عَمَّا أَرْضَعَتْ وَتَضَعُ كُلُّ ذَاتِ حَمْلٍ حَمْلَهَا وَتَرَى النَّاسَ سُكَارَى وَمَا هُم بِسُكَارَى وَلَكِنَّ عَذَابَ اللَّهِ شَدِيدٌ}

“O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing. On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.” [Al Hajj: 1-2]

If the children are young, they will age from fear and panic. They did not commit any crime so what about the rest of the people?! Allah Almighty says:

{فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْماً يَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِيباً}

“Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired?” [Al Muzammil: 17]

There are other descriptions of this day but the discussion here is about the situation of the people as a whole. More details will follow by the grace of Allah in the Section: The situation of the people on the Day of Resurrection. There are special descriptions that will be mentioned and Allah knows best.

-If the people are gathered, there would be gathering, worry, grief, sorrow and a nearing of the sun within the distance of a mile of the people as it was proven in Sahih Muslim from the Hadith of Sulaym ibn Aamir about Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with them) raising: “the sun would draw so close to the people that there woum be left only a distance of one mile. Sulaim b. Amir said: By Allah, I do not know whether he meant by" mile" the mile of the (material) earth or dn instrument used for applying collyrium to the eye.[8]

-What will people do in his situation? The explanation for that will follow shortly in the Hadith of the Shafaa (intercession).
