The Grave

What are the names of the two angels who will question the deceased?

At-Tirmidhy narrated in his Sunan the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When the deceased (or he said: any one of you) is buried, two black and blue angels, one of whom is called Munkar and the other Nakeer come to him. They say, ‘What did you say about this man?’ And he says what he used to say, that he is the slave of Allah and His Messenger, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’ They say, ‘We knew that you would say this.’ Then his grave is expanded, seventy cubits wide, and it is filled with light. He says, ‘Let me go back to my family and tell them.’ They say, ‘Sleep like a bridegroom whom no one will wake but his most beloved,’ until Allah raises him up. But if he was a hypocrite he says, ‘I heard the people saying something and I said likewise, I do not know.’ So they say, ‘We knew that you would say that.’ Then it is said to the earth, ‘Squeeze him,’ so it squeezes him until his ribs interlock. And he will remain like that, being tormented, until Allah raises him up...”[1]

Benefit: in another Hadith the names of the two angels came as: Mubasshir and Bashir. In a Hadith: there are 4 of them and the names of the third and fourth are Nakoor and Rumman. All of them are weak Hadiths.

Another benefit: among the people of knowledge they called them Munkir and Nakeer (meaning “Denied”) because they are two names that are not given to the angels that Allah Almighty described with the qualities of praise so they make the previous Hadiths weak. The reason for these names: they were called by that not because their qualities are denied but because the deceased does not know them so denies them as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to his angel guest:

{ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ }

“He answered, "[And upon you] peace, [you are] a people unknown.” [Al Thariyat: 25]

(This is) because he did not know them

Munkar spoke to them, is correct as Al Suyuti says, may Allah be pleased with him.

Munkar was adjusted by opening the kaaf (a letter in Arabic similar to “k”, but “opening it” by putting an “a” in front of it)    So I do not know any discrepancy in it (the name)

After the trial there is the destiny and the situation in the grave, either in comfort (we ask Allah for his permission) or in punishment (we ask Allah Almighty for peace and tranquility).

[1] Ibn Hibban authenticated it (7/386) and Al Albany improved it, may Allah be pleased with them all
