The Air Cycles and Islam

Not many references in Islam talk about the air. In one instance, the Qur’an describes how the birds are using the air, its warm currents in order to fly. Do they not look at the birds, held poised in the midst of (the air and) the sky? Nothing holds them up but (the power of) Allah. “Verily in this are signs for those who believe.” [Qur’an, Surah An-Nahl, 16:79]

Usually the air is referred as the ability to breathe into something to give it shape and life. Allah Ta’ala breathed into His hands to give life to the first man and the first woman. And it is true that the Oxygen we breathe from the air makes us live and helps purify our body. We do not make any effort to make our lungs go; it is a natural gift! And (remember) her (Mary) who guarded her chastity: “We breathed into her of Our spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for all peoples.” [Qur’an, Surah Al-Anbiya’, 21:91]

Prophet ‘Iesa (Jesus) (Peace be upon him) was given the miracle of life, after the permission of Allah was given. "And (appoint him) an apostle to the Children of Israel, (with this message):" 'I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah’s leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by Allah’s leave; and I declare to you what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if you did believe.’ [Qur’an, Surah Al-Imran, 48:49] 

Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the Holy Spirit, so that thou did speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel and behold! thou make out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathed into it and it became a bird by My leave, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! You brought forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when you did show them the clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: 'This is nothing but evident magic.'" [Qur’an, Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:110]
