STATISTICS from the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) show that the number of divorce cases dropped to 27,355 in 2011 from 28,035 in 2010.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said as for the number of marriages, it increased to 140,529 last year from 135,548 in 2010.

"Although the number of divorce cases dropped last year, the problem is still worrying and needs to be given appropriate attention," she said after opening the "Rumahku Syurgaku" (My House My Heaven) seminar, here, today.

Therefore, she said, efforts were being made to compel couples, especially those in the public sector, to attend post-marriage courses which was expected to help reduce divorce rates among Muslim couples.

Mashitah said the course would also be included in the 1Malaysia Family 1st program overseen by Jakim with the cooperation of the State Islamic Religious Departments, Women, Family and Community Development Ministry and non-governmental organizations.
