Swiss Butcher facing jail term after selling Pork as ‘Halal Veal’

Geneva – A Swiss butcher is facing up to six months in jail and18,000 Swiss francs fine for passing off 3.1 tons of pork, which is a non-halal product, as calf meat,  according to Morocco World News.

The butcher has reportedly sold a massive amount of pork products to Muslims who believed that they were buying veal. Under Islamic law, Muslims are not allowed to consume pork or blood. Animals are required to have been slaughtered invoking the name of Allah.

Upon inspection of his facility, it was discovered that what he was selling as calf meat looked nothing like it should. He was charged with “fraud and misrepresentation.”

“If customers had known it was pork, they would not have bought it because Islam forbids the consumption of this type of meat,” the prosecutor told the courtroom. The name of the butcher who “accidentally” sold the meat is not being released. Authorities fear that he may face violent backlash from the Muslim community.
