The meaning of filial gratitude to parents:

The meaning of filial gratitude to parents is showing love and respect to them, helping them, and lowering one's voice when speaking to them.

The call of Islam to filial gratitude to parents:

Islam called people to filial gratitude to parents and showing benevolence to them. Allah (may He be Exalted) said: "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honor." [Surat Al Isra': 23].

Filial gratitude to parents is one of the best types by which a Muslim draws nearer to Allah (may He be Exalted) because parents are the reason for the existence of children and the reason of their happiness. A mother stays up nights to rear her children and to take care of them. She spends long nights to take care of her young children who cannot take care of themselves. As for the father, he exerts many efforts to earn his penny and collect money to feed, clothe, teach, and help his children achieve their dreams.

The status of filial gratitude to parents:

Islam is eager to honor parents and care for them, and considered that equal to Jihad in the cause of Allah. A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to give him the pledge of allegiance to fight for the sake of Allah. The Messenger (peace be upon him) asked him: Is any of your parents alive? The man said: They are both alive, O Messenger of Allah. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remarked: "Go back to your parents and be a good companion to them."

Of the rights of parents:

Of these rights mentioned in the Glorious Qur'an are:

1- Obeying their commands as long as they do not command you with a sin.

2- Showing humbleness to them and treating them kindly and leniently.

3- Speaking with them softly and using the sweetest words when speaking to them.

4- Nice treatment with them particularly at their old age.

5- Invoking Allah for them of mercy and forgiveness after their death.

The most entitled people of good company:

The greatest companionship is the companionship of parents by which a person pleases his Lord and hopes for good reward in this world and in the Hereafter.

Exhortation to filial gratitude to parents and warning against disobeying them:

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The satisfaction of Allah is achieved by the satisfaction of the father and the wrath of Allah is incurred by the wrath of the father."

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Shall I inform you about the grievous of the major sins? We said: Sure, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Verily, Allah forbade for you the disobedience of mothers and bury alive (a new born girl) daughters."

Filial gratitude to parents after their death:

Filial gratitude does not end by their death or the death of one of them, but it continues after their death. It was reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there any act of dutifulness which I can do for my parents after their death? He replied: Yes. (There are four things:) Supplication for them, asking forgiveness for them, fulfilling their pledges after their death, establishing good ties of kinship, and being generous to their friends."
