The word (Da`wah) is one of the Qur'anic and Prophetic words as it is one of the Shari`ah words. Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted)says: "Say (O Muhammad peace be upon him): "This is my way; I invite to Allâh (i.e. to the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allâh i.e. to the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism with sure knowledge)." [Surat Yusuf: 108].

The Prophet (peace be upon him)said to Mu`adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) when he sent him to Yemen: "You will go to the people of the Book. First, call them to testify that `there is no true god except Allah." [Reported by and Al Bukhari and Muslim].After the event of 9/11 a new term appeared which is (Defining Islam), whereas some Muslims liked that new expression! Indeed, wild souls like everything new and like to be safe of troubles because Da`wah is a kind of Jihad, seeking the reward from Allah, and getting people from darkness to light. As for defining Islam, it is just describing Islam, explaining its goods, industry, etc.

Defining Islam indicates superficiality, therefore it was dispraised in the Qur'an, Allah (Glory be to Him) says: "Those to whom We gave the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (Muhammad peace be upon him or the Ka'bah at Makkah) as they recognize their sons. But verily, a party of them conceal the truth while they know it - [i.e. the qualities of Muhammad peace be upon him which are written in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)]."[Surat Al Baqarah: 146]. When Al Jahm ibn Safwan said: Faith is just having the knowledge, the grand Imams of the Pious Predecessors called him as a disbeliever, such as Imam Ahmad, Waki`, and Al Qasim ibn Salam. Likewise, our Pious Predecessors criticized the word "`Arif" [knowledgeable] as a term of Sufis because it is important to use Shari`ah words such as a believer, a pious, and a righteous.

The meaning is Shari`ah words are precise, inclusive, sufficient, and clear, moreover they have sanctity as they are derived from the Shari`ah, not as modern words. So, will the callers to Allah prefer to be called "definers" and dislike that nice description in Allah's Saying: "And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allâh (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands firm (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allâh's (Islâmic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."" [Surat Fussilat: 33].
