The Oxford Islamic Information Centre (OIIC) is aiming to raise £10,000 for the victims of the Philippines typhoon through collections at mosques, schools and shops.

On Saturday, members held a street collection in Oxford’s city centre and raised £2,000 to be sent to the Philippines via Muslim Aid and the Human Appeal International charities.

OIIC director Dr Hojjat Ramzy, right, said: “These poor people have lost their homes, their loved ones, their food and belongings and are left with nothing.

“In the spirit of Islam, which strongly encourages the giving of charity and aid to those in need, we are raising funds to help alleviate their struggles in the face of such tragedy.

“As the festive season arrives and we enjoy our comforts and security, let us spare a thought for those who have been stripped of their possessions and show them we care.”

Also on Saturday the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper raised more than £2,000 for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan at the town’s Waitrose store. The club has already donated a Shelter box which will provide a tent and survival equipment for a family of up to 10 people.
