Ending the fast by intention

Dr. Ibrahim in Fahd ibn Ibrahim Al Wad`an

Selections from the words of Sheikh Muhammad ibn `Uthaymain (may Allah be bestow mercy on his soul)

A man on a journey intends to break his fast but he could not find something to break his fast with. When it was the time of sunset, he resumed the intention of fasting; so what is the ruling on his fasting?

The Answer:

A man on a journey intends to break his fast then he changed his mind and wanted to keep his fast when he saw that the sunset is near; will his fast be valid or not? I say: This is not permissible because when he intended to break his fast, the fast ended even if he did not eat or drink as long as he had the intention of breaking the fast. If he changed his mind and wanted to resume fasting, it will be invalid also because the intention of the obligatory fasting must be recalled before dawn.
