How to Calculate Zakat of Gold of Different Carats

[طريقة احتساب زكاة الذهب من عيارات مختلفة]

Fiqhi Counseling _ استشارات فقهية[*]

Q : How to calculate gold of different carat while paying Zakat?
A:
Bismillah walhamdulillahi was salatu was salamu ‘ala Rasoolillah, amma ba’d.

(1) Nisab of Zakat is 85 gram if it is of 24 carat.

(2) If one owns 33 gm gold of both 21 & 18 carat, then this is one of the ways how pure gold can be calculated:

[a] Multiply the amount (i.e. 33 gm) by 21 and 18; then divide by 24.
(21
×33)+ (18×33)÷24=53.625 gm

[b] 53.625 gm is the pure gold of 24 carat.

[c] Zakat of gold is 2.5% of the whole amount, but should it be here 1.34 gm?!
No...Why? Because it implies if the Nisab of gold reaches 85 gm. And here it is (53.625 gm) less than 85 gm. So, there is no Zakat on this gold unless…

(3) Unless one has cash and silver etc; in that case he should to calculate all those together and check.

(4) Some scholars prefer the Nisab of silver i.e. 595 gm because it is more profitable for the poor. That means if one’s wealth becomes equivalent to the market price of 595 gm silver at least and lasts one Hijri lunar year, then he has to pay Zakat.

Allah knows best.
