Michigan Muslims Mobilize their Community to visit Lansing and Prepare to Vote

The Michigan Muslim Community Council (MMCC) will host the annual Michigan Muslim Capitol Day at the State Capitol in Lansing.

Over 200 guests are expected to visit from many parts of Michigan to meet their elected representatives. This year, Michigan Muslims are very concerned about the increasing hate speech directed against immigrants, new Americans and people who are perceived as "Muslim."

Rather than resort to fear and create division in our country, MMCC encourages our leaders to focus on the important challenges to our state. MMCC will ask state legislators to invest in neglected communities, particularly Flint residents who have had their water contaminated, and Detroit residents who have seen their school system worsen.

The Capitol Day is a non-partisan event and over 25 Republicans and Democrat legislators have stepped forward as co-hosts. Several Muslim schools with middle school and high school students will also be present. Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein will be addressing the attendees as the keynote speaker, talking about both his Jewish faith and his challenges through law school. Hon. Judge Dave Turfe of Dearborn Heights will also discuss the difficulties he overcame as an American Muslim striving to serve his community.
