Wellington Mosque shows 'True Face of Islam'

The doors of a Wellington mosque were thrown open today to let the community know that violent extremism seen recently overseas isn't reflected here.

Hundreds of people joined a tour of the Kilbirnie Centre, taking advantage of the chance to meet local Muslims.

Visitors were also shown how to write their names in Arabic and could sample food from different ethnic groups.

"We are Muslims and New Zealanders," said Asif Koya, director of the Federation of Islamic Associations.

"We want to show them the true face of Islam, not in the way it's been portrayed sometimes in the media, especially overseas," Mr Koya said.

The annual event is part of a nationwide awareness week designed to promote a greater understanding of Islamic beliefs.
