Question

I met a girl and loved her very much, but when I asked about her in college, students said: She used to speak with boys, however in the limits of study. Her way of dressing was not good, but she changed it in the last year of college. I know that she was religious and respectful but after a while I knew that she had an anal sex and when I asked her about that, she said: It was because of the bad companionship she had, but now –thanks to Allah- she changed them in the last year; what should I do? May I marry her, taking into consideration that I love her very much or should I leave her? Could you kindly advise? May Allah reward you!

Answer

All praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family, his Companions, and those who follow him. Judging a person should be done according to his current conditions because a person may be a disbeliever then repents sincerely to Allah and does not commit evil anymore; so Allah would forgive his sins. Hence, as long as the girl has repented of what she was doing and became religious, there is no objection to marry her. Grand Companions were disbelievers and straying to the extent that `Amr ibn Al `As said: O Messenger Allah, I shall pledge allegiance to you provided that my past sins should be forgiven. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "O `Amr, give pledge of allegiance because Islam expiates past sins and migration expiates past sins." [Reported by Ahmad].
