Question

As-Salamu `Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)

I am 17-years-old girl and my feelings toward others are excessive. I love people very much and when I love them, I get attached to them; and I love some of them obsessively.

I think about them all the time, and when I see them, I get nervous and strange things happen to me and I have countless feelings.

Is this a psychological disease?

Answer

My honorable daughter, As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!).

Welcome to Alukah network, we ask the Almighty Lord to help us provide what is useful to all people.

My dear, the strong feelings you have toward others and your attachment with them may refer to a dire need in yourself to the love and interest of others which pushes you forward to express love, affection, and interest and that is the sentimental saturation you feel which may reduce the pressure of your need.

The reason could be your deprivation of affection or the required concern from your family members or you have a strong belief that you are deprived of it. Moreover, your age which you pass has a great impact in emotional exaggeration and speed of attachment with others.

Therefore, the feelings you are facing now have no relation in any psychological disease as you believe, but it is connected by a psychological and sentimental need. It represents a temporary stage which its intensity ends with the advancement of your age and acquiring more experiments, by the will of Allah.

Therefore, I advise you to invest these feelings in positive things that come back on your personal, intellectual, value, and emotional building.

Among these things: Engaging in voluntary works that serve orphan institutions, old people, people of special needs, or other things which attract your inclination with the importance of not to make these activities affect your school performance by organizing your time and your care to use it properly.

Finally, I conclude with this invocation to Allah to reform your conditions.
