Polygyny or spinsterhood!

Question

I am 44 years old, unmarried, and religious, but no one asked for my hand. A 43 married man came to marry me. He is very religious, has a good reputation, and he promised me to be just between me and his first wife, moreover he loves me a lot and wants to make me happy.

The problem is: I am afraid of people's talk, could you kindly help me to take the right decision?

Answer

All praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, his Companions, and those who follow him.

Do not hesitate to accept that person as long as he is religious and of good manners. Leave out people's talk and the society's attitude to the second marriage or polygyny because it is not compatible with the Shari`ah and unrealistic. No doubt this false attitude violates the Shari`ah of Allah (may He be Exalted) where He permitted a man to marry more than one wife up to four wives. Allah (may He be Exalted) says: "Then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four." [Surat An-Nisa': 3].

The outcome is: There is no harm on you to be a second wife because this one of the things which Allah permitted and was done by the venerable Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), but rather the Prophet (peace be upon him)did so, where he married more than one wife; however the Shari`ah granted him some qualities to marry more than four where he married eleven women.
