Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)

I am a twenty-years-old girl. I have a friendship with my teacher who is my closest friend. I do not have sisters and I consider my teacher a Muslim sister.

Some people consider me wrong, and what is the wrong in that? Is not she a human being? Is it wrong that I befriend my teacher? What should I do when such speech is directed to me while I believe I am right?!

Answer

Wa `Alaykumus-Salam war-Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh (peace be upon you).

My young sister, friendship is something great and is loved by Allah (Glory be to Him). One of the seven types whom Allah shall shade on a day where there will be no shade is those who love one another for Allah's Sake, and they shall be on pulpits of light.

Some Pious Predecessors used to have so many friends to help them enter Paradise. As for you sister, if you consider your friendship with your teacher correct and does not lead to something hated by Allah, continue to have this friendship because, unfortunately, the society looks badly at some matters instead of exhorting people to love one another. However, if you are concerned with your image before others and in order not to cause embarrassment to your teacher, you should abide by the school rules and keeping yourself away from doubts and that is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) did when one of his wives [Safiyyah] came to him in the Masjid and came out to seek her off. Two men from the Ansar [the Supporters] passed by them, and he said: "Wait, do not walk away."

The narrations said: They saluted him then passed by quickly. Thereupon, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Wait, do not walk away, she is Safiyyah bint Huyay." Al Bukhari said in this narration: They said: Glory be to Allah, O Messenger of Allah; and pronounced Takbir at them as if they say: Why do you stop us? Why do you say: Come -as was reported in some narrations- then you say that she is Safiyyah? Does anyone doubt in the religiousness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) God forbid!

No one doubts the religiousness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and if they doubt that, they shall be disbelievers. He said: And pronounced Takbir at them, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "And Satan circulates in the body of Adam's offspring as his blood circulates in it. I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds."

So, if you see that the speech of the people around you harms you, keep away from them and do not listen to them. I advise you of invocation and frequent seeking of forgiveness, asking Allah to make your friendship a good help to you for His Obedience and worship.
