"And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness)." (4)

2- Feeling Allah's Observation to a person:

A person trains himself for fearing Allah as a person feels Allah's Observation to him, hence he feels shy when committing a sin and exerts efforts in obedience. Allah (may He be Exalted) says: "And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do." [Surat Al Hadid: 4].

Sufyan ibn `Uyaynah said: Shyness is the least degree of piety, and a person does not fear Allah until he achieves shyness. Have the people of piety entered into piety except through shyness?

Some knowledgeable people said: "Fear Allah as much as He can harm you and show shyness as much as He is close to you."

Al Harith Al Muhasaby said: "Monitoring means the heart's knowledge of Allah's Closeness."

When you become alone one day, do not say I am alone, but say: I have a watcher over me.

And do not think that Allah neglects even a moment nor that you hide is away from Him.

3- Knowing that the path of unlawful is full of corruptions and pains:

There is no evil or defect in this world and in the Hereafter but the cause of which is sins and faults.

Ibn Al Qayyim (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) said: "So, what did bring out Adam and Eve from Paradise, the abode of bliss and pleasure, to the abode of pains and sadness? What did bring Satan out of the kingdom of heavens, expel and curse him? Who sank the people of earth until water became over the tops of mountains and what destroyed `Ad, Thamud, and others?"

No doubt that the path of evil can jeopardize a person to sooner or later torment, narrowness of chest and sustenance, bring about people's hatred and removal of blessing. It looks like a delicious but poisoned food with which a person enjoys for moments, but its pains remain in life and after death.

4- You have to learn how to disobey your whim and obey your lord:

Allah (may He be Exalted) says: "Then, for him who Tagha (transgressed all bounds, in disbelief, oppression and evil deeds of disobedience to Allah). * And preferred the life of this world (by following his evil desires and lusts), * Verily, his abode will be Hell-fire * But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts. * Verily, Paradise will be his abode." [Surat An-Nazi`at: 37 - 41].

Allah (Exalted be He) says: "But for him who fears the standing before his Lord, there will be two Gardens (i.e. in Paradise)." [Surat Ar-Rahman: 46].

It was said: A person loves sins then he remembers the status of his Lord in the world and his standing before Him in the Hereafter, then he leaves them for the sake of Allah.

Ibn Al Qayyim (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) said: "The core of the matter is desiring the obedience of Allah, dedicating all actions to His Sake, drawing nearer to Him with different means, and yearning to meet Him. If a person has no vigor to that, so he has a desire to Paradise, its blessings, and what Allah prepared therein for His Righteous people. If a person has no high vigor to urge him to do so, he should fear Hell-Fire and what Allah prepared therein for those who disobey Him. If himself does not comply, he should know that he was created for Hell-Fire not for bliss, and a person cannot do this except by disobeying his whim."

5- Knowing the plots and traps of Satan:

Scholar Ibn Muflih Al Maqdisy (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) said: Know that Satan stands for a believer in seven obstacles: The obstacle of disbelief, if a person becomes safe of it, he falls into the obstacle of heresy. If a person becomes safe of it, he faces the obstacle of committing major sins, then in the obstacle of minor sins. If a person becomes safe of it, he falls into the obstacle of performing permissible matters to busy him therewith from performing voluntary actions. If a person overcomes Satan, Satan busies him with less favored actions rather than virtuous actions. If a person comes safe of that, Satan stands for him in the seventh obstacle and a believer shall not become safe of it because if he had become safe of it, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would have been safe of it which is Giving power to wicked enemies to cause harm to him.

Knowing these obstacles and the entries of Satan to the heart help to avoid him.

Ibn Al Jawzy said: "Indeed, Satan insinuates to people as much as he could. His power over them varies between increase and decrease according to people's awareness and indifference, ignorance and knowledge."

Of the things which are sought to help in obeying the Most Merciful so that a person guards himself against Satanic insinuations are the following:

1- Asking for Allah's Protection. Allah (may He be Exalted) says: "And if an evil whisper from Shaitân (Satan) tries to turn you away (from doing good), then seek refuge in Allâh. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower." [Surat Fussilat: 36].

2- Reciting Surat An-Nas and Surat Al Falaq. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The people have never sought refuge (with Allah) by means of anything like them."

3- Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursy (the Qur'anic Ayah of Allah's Chair, Surah Al Baqarah) at sleep. 4- Reciting Surat Al Baqarah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Verily, the home in which Surat Al Baqarah is recited, Satan does not enter."

5- The concluding Ayahs of Surat Al Baqarah: "Whoever recites the last two Ayahs of Surat Al Baqarah in a night, they will be sufficient for him [from any harm or any extra voluntary actions]."

6- "La Ilaha Illa Allah wahdahu La Sharika Lah. Lahu Al Mulk wa lahu Al Hamd, wa Huwa `Ala Kulli Shay'in Qadir [None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone without partner. He has dominance and praise, and He is All Able over everything].  whoever recites it one hundred times a day, it will be a protection for him from Satan until the night."

7- Frequent mention of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He). Nothing can protect a person from Satan as the mention of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He).

8- Ablution and Salah. Ibn Al Qayyim (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) said: "This is a tested matter which there is no need to set a proof to it."

9- Refraining from extra looks, speech, food, and association of people, for Satan is granted power over people and gets his purpose from the mentioned four points.
