The Grave

The grave has darkness

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a dark-complexioned woman (or a youth) used to sweep the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) missed her (or him) and inquired about her (or him). The people told him that she (or he) had died. He asked why they did not inform him, and it appears as if they had treated her (or him) or her (or his) affairs as of little account. He (the Holy Prophet) said:

Lead me to her (or his) grave. They led him to that place and he said prayer over her (or him) and then remarked: Verily, these graves are full of darkness for their dwellers. Verily, the Mighty and Glorious Allah illuminates them for their occupants by reason of my prayer over them.” [1]

Question 7/46: The punishment of the grave is confirmed by the book, Sunnah and consensus.

From the book: His words Almighty

{ يُثَبِّتُ اللّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الآخِرَةِ }

“Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter.” [Ibrahim: 27]

From the Sunnah:

A. The Hadith of Al Baraa ibn Al Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: " When a Muslim is questioned in his grave, he will testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) that is what is meant by Allah's Statement: "Allah will keep firm those who believe with a Word that stands firm in this world and in the Hereafter. [Ibrahim: 27].”[2]  This blessed verse and noble Hadith prove that not every person is steadfast with the question. Only the believer (is). We ask Allah Almighty for steadfastness and righteousness

B. The Hadith of Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them) in the Hadith of the kusoof (eclipse) prayer. In it, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “you (people) will be put in trial in your graves …”[3]

C. The Hadith of `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from laziness and geriatric old age, from all kinds of sins and from being in debt; from the affliction of the Fire and from the punishment of the Fire…”[4] . The hadtihs about this are many and the pious predecessors (may Allah be pleased with them) have agreed on the authenticity of the trials of the grave.
