The condition of the people on the Day of Resurrection (the Muslims) (2)

Sins for which Allah does not speak to the ones who committed them on the Day of Resurrection. He does not purify them. He does not look at them and they have a painful punishment.

What is meant: the ones who committed these sins; Allah Almighty said:

{لاَ يُكَلِّمُهُمُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ }

“Will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection”

The consensus of the commentators is that He will not speak to them words that will benefit them nor make matters easier for them nor accept from them. There are other words that are more correct (Allah knows best) that Allah Almighty will speak to the companions of the fire in the fire but it is not speech of acceptance. Allah Almighty says:

{اخْسَؤُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ}

“Be ashamed in it and do not speak”

{وَلاَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ}

“And does not look at them”

Meaning: He does not look at them in a special way but turns away from them. He does not look at them a look of mercy or kindness. As for the common look, Allah Almighty looks at everything, His majesty.

{وَلاَ يُزَكِّيهِمْ}

“He does not purify them”

Meaning: He does not clean them from dirtiness and does not bend over them in goodness. They are various categories:

The first: those who hide what Allah Almighty has brought down in the book

 (They are) Scholars of the community, who hide some knowledge in order to please their leaders, gain some personal benefit or gain a share of the world. They have become similar to the priests and monks among the Jews and Christians in their hiding (of knowledge). They will have this fate.

Allah Almighty said:

{إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ مَا أَنزَلَ اللّهُ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَيَشْتَرُونَ بِهِ ثَمَناً قَلِيلاً أُولَـئِكَ مَا يَأْكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمْ إِلاَّ النَّارَ وَلاَ يُكَلِّمُهُمُ اللّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلاَ يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ }

“Indeed, they who conceal what Allah has sent down of the Book and exchange it for a small price - those consume not into their bellies except the Fire. And Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. And they will have a painful punishment.” [Al Baqara: 174]

In Sunan Abu Dawud, there is the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “He who is asked something he knows and conceals it will have a bridle of fire put on him on the Day of Resurrection..”[1]

The second: those who contradict what Allah Almighty had promised them and use their faith to gain a small amount

They take an oath by false faith so they gain a worldly gain. Allah Almighty said:

{إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللّهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَناً قَلِيلاً أُوْلَـئِكَ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ وَلاَ يُكَلِّمُهُمُ اللّهُ وَلاَ يَنظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلاَ يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَلَـهُمْ عَـذَابٌ أَلِـيمٌ}

“Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment.” [Al Imran: 77]

Al Bukhari said regarding the Hadith of Abdullah ibn Abu Awfi (may Allah be pleased with him): “A man displayed some goods in the market and swore by Allah that he had been offered so much for that, that which was not offered, and he said so, so as to cheat a Muslim. On that occasion the following Verse was revealed:

{إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللّهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَناً قَلِيلاً }

“Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price”[2]

It (the narration) came in Sahih Muslim clarifying this promise for those who sell their commodities with false oaths because people believe them. The commodity will be sold then so there would be a false oath to sell a commodity. Abu Thar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Three are the (persons) with whom Allah would neither speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor would look at them nor would absolve the and there is a painful chastisement for them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) repeated it three times. Abu Dharr remarked: They failed and they lost; who are these persons, Messenger of Allah? Upon this he (the Holy) Prophet) observed: They are: the dragger of lower garment, the recounter of obligation the seller of goods by false oath.”[3]

Al Tabbari said: from the Hadith of Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) wha proves that humans deserve this promise even if he is honest, when he increases in taking oaths by Allah Almighty. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There are three types of people to whom Allah will not speak and neither will he bless them and for them is a severe torment. They are: the white-haired old adulterer; the arrogant beggar; and the one who makes Allah as his merchandise: He does not purchase except by swearing (by Allah) and he does not sell except by swearing”[4]. Al Munthiri said: their narrators are in the right.

The third: the Musbil

The fourth: the Mannan

This (Musbil) is the one who drags his garment below his ankles[5]. Likewise, it (Mannan) is also the one who gives by showing his favours upon people with it. They will enter this promise (of punishment) because of the previous Hadith of Abu Thar (may Allah be pleased with him). In it: “the Musbil, the Mannan and the seller of goods by false oath”[6]

The fifth: the elderly if he commits Zina (fornication /adultery)

The sixth: the King or leader if they lie

The seventh: the poor if he is proud

The promise for these three came in the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) with Muslim. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Three (are the persons) with whom Allah would neither speak, nor would He absolve them on the Day of Resurrection. Abu Mu'awiya added: He would not look at them and there is grievous torment for them: the aged adulterer, the liar king and the proud destitute.”[7]

The reason for the gathering of these three on this promise: because all of them committed a sin with little need for it.

The aged adulterer: he is old aged. His lust has cooled down and his desire has reduced but with that he is a fornicator /adulterator. This is very strange in his situation because of the few reasons for it.

The liar king: likewise. He is the imam (leader) so he does not fear anyone from his subjects and does not need to flatter anyone. Lying from him is strange because of the few reasons for it.

The proud destitute: he is poor so why is he proud?! Most of those who are proud are proud because of what they have from wealth, eminence and resources in this world. These are things that the poor do not have. Pride from him is a very strange thing from him because of the few reasons for it. He is the one in need and maybe people form obstacles for his needs. How can he be proud over them and he does not have anything to be proud of?[8]

The eighth: the one who has (water) but forbids (from drinking it) ibn al sabeel in the desert

The nineth: the one who sells off the Muslims in order to gain worldly benefits

If someone forbids Ibn Al Sabeel, and that is the traveler and the like from excess water that he has, then he will fall into this promise. Likewise, the one who sells off the Muslims in order to gain worldly benefit; if he is given from the world, its wealth is with him and if he is not given it (the wealth), he will not lose it. Meaning: his religion did not sell for him, was not an advice for him and was (not) supporting the truth that was with him in the book and the Sunnah but was for the sake of the world. He will enter this promise.

Proof to that:

The Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There are three types of people whom Allah will neither talk to, nor look at, on the Day of Resurrection. (They are): -1. A man who takes an oath falsely that he has been offered for his goods so much more than what he is given, -2. a man who takes a false oath after the `Asr prayer in order to grab a Muslim's property, and -3. a man who withholds his superfluous water. Allah will say to him, "Today I will withhold My Grace from you as you withheld the superfluity of what you had not created.”[9]

[5] There is a clear discrepancy regarding this promise, whether the person downcasts their izar (clothes) out of necessacity or out of pride. It is not a clear dispute; who does the promise apply to? What is clear and Allah knows best is that the promise applies to the one who downcasts their izar out of pride so Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. The dispute has been summarised in Ibhaj Muslim by explaining Sahih Muslim in the book, Al Iman Sharh Al Hadith number (74)
