Talents are divine gifts which Allah has given for whomever He wants of His Servants and it is also part of Allah's Destiny. Ziyad ibn Sa`d reported from `Amr ibn Muslim on the authority of Tawus who said: "I met some people from the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who were saying: Everything was connected by Divine Decree." He said: I heard `Abdullah ibn `Umar narrating that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Everything is connected by Divine Decree even inability and smartness or smartness and inability." [Reported by Muslim].

Discernment and Smartness

Discernment, smartness, and talent are connected by Divine Decree. Allah has distributed these talents among His Servants wisely to be used in things which Allah ordained and in the service of Islam, humanity, and civilization.

Prophets and messengers used these talents which Allah provided them as should. Allah (Glory be to Him) granted kingdom, knowledge, and wisdom to David and Solomon (peace be upon them) and they thanked Allah for these divine gifts by using them properly: (And indeed We gave Knowledge to Dawud (David) and Sulayman (Solomon), and they both said: All the praises and thanks be to Allah, who has preferred us above many of His Believing Servants. And Sulayman inherited (the knowledge of) Dawud. He said: "O mankind, we have been taught the language of birds, and on us have been bestowed all things. This, verily, is an evident grace (from Allah) And there were gathered before Sulayman (Solomon) his hosts of jinns and men, and birds, and they all were set in battle order (marching forwards).) [Surat An-Naml: 15-17]. Shu`ayb, the preacher of prophets, used his addressing and persuasive talent in his conversations with the secularists of his time, which tried to seclude religion from the state. This was manifest in their sayings, as mentioned in the Qur'an: "They said: "O Shu'aib! Does your Salât (prayer) command that we give up what our fathers used to worship, or that we give up doing what we like with our property? Verily, you are the forbearer, right-minded!" (They said this sarcastically)." [Surat Hud: 87]. The Companions used their talents in serving Islam and calling to Allah as well. Zayd ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) mastered Hebrew as well as Syriac in fifteen days to be the first translator in Islam.

Abdur-Rahman ibn `Awf used his economic skills until he became the richest Companion [in Madinah]; each one should use his talent properly so that he could benefit Muslims and non-Muslims as well.

Alas! We find some people use these skills in malice, deceit, and opportunism. Moreover, they use them in killing talents and abilities which Allah granted to His Servants, and when they find someone successful and distinct in his knowledge and work, they send him away or exclude him so that their inefficiency could not be discovered.

How many talents were killed because of enviers who do not present goodness for people and do not let goodness reach people! How many people suffered in their lives and presented all they could to achieve their needs! However, when they see that inferior people have been given priority because of favoritism or for few money, they are shocked! How many people stayed awake all night to invent a machine then, at the end, it was buried with other inventions until the Day of Recompense! All these things destroy many talents or the owners of these inventions export them to a country that appreciates these talents.

Some examples of killing talents:

These talents are killed because of the boring red-tape that is used in educational gatherings, in curriculums, and in our entire life.

Those who kill talents are sinful because they are wrong-doers, and oppression will be multiplied on the Day of Recompense because their deniable crime did not stop at the limit of harming individuals, but the harm exceeds to the entire world because they deprive people of these talents which present benefit for them.

O talents killers, may Allah fight you wherever you are! By Allah, you shall be asked about these talents which Allah granted for His Servants because you prevented their owners to make progress and deprived society of benefitting from them.
