Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!).

I am a female student specialized in psychology. I was asked to conduct a study about the behavioral disorder in inside my family.

I searched a lot but did not find but my niece who is suffering from crying during sleep. The problem here is: We have studied disorders by all types, especially sleep disorders, but the problem of crying during sleep was not included. Hence, my question is: Is crying during sleep a behavioral disorder that should be included in sleep disorders?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Inspirer for the truth and the One whose aid is to be implored.

Dear sister, when we speak about the "Behavioral Disorder," we mean that we search for a present problem at children or adolescents, so put this matter before you.

Behavioral disorder as Dr. `Abdul-Mun`im Madbuly said: "Do not result from diseases, physical defects, or spastic disorders. Moreover, they are not part of psychosis or certain neurosis," and there is a group of disorders branched from them:

First, disorder of customs, which includes:

1- Disorders of eating.

2- Disorders of nutrition:

• Strong appetency for eating.

• Corpulence.

• Anorexia nervosa.

• Pica.

3- Elimination disorders:

• Bed wetting.

• Encopresis.

4- Sleeping deprivation:

• Sleepwalking.

• Nightmares.

• Night terror.

• Sleep anxiety.

• Insomnia.

• Long sleep.

• Light sleep.

• The diabetes sleep.

• Hypnoid states.

5- Transvestism.

6- Movement disorder habits:

• Thumb-sucking.

• Onychophagy.

Second, behavioral disorders:

1- Escaping from school.

2- Fighting.

3- Morbid lying.

4- Stealing.

5- Forgery.

6- Ignition of fire.

7- Destruction of properties.

8- Drinking alcohol.

9- Drug addiction.

10- Sexual crimes.

Third, problems of studying and achievement:

As for the case of your niece, you should search for the causes of her cry and when you know the cause, it is easy to analyze the case. If crying was due to nightmares and disturbing dreams, for instance, you can say that night crying is part of sleep disorder. However, if she was crying due to physical pains such as dental or abdominal pain, the matter will be different because crying due to physical causes cannot be counted as behavioral disorder, otherwise we all shall be behaviorally sick.

I wish you good luck, success, and guidance; Allah (Glory be to Him) knows the best.
