Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you.)

Sometimes, there are some important words that I may hear repeatedly, but I do not know their exact meanings? Of these words are the following: " taking a decision",  "love",  "Islam",  "Christianity",  "secularism",  and "current".

I know some of the general meanings of these words, but I do not know their scientific definition. For example, the term "Islamic current" sometimes it bears greater meaning than speaking about an Islamic group, an Islamic organization, or something of the like.

All I want to ask about is: Is there a systematic way to decode the symbols of these words that I encounter in life? Should I look these words up in the Arabic lexicons and that is it?

Could you kindly advise? May Allah guide your minds and ours! Amen.

Answer

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!). Our dear brother, we welcome you in Al Alukah website.

In the beginning, we should all know that the ambiguity of terms is the main reason in the lack of interaction with their implications, as clarity is the main reason for sound understanding that leads to deep faith in these terms and then to continuous work.

Frequently, we hear many words that are composed together to make up new terms that we can hardly find their full meanings, but if we to follow some methods, we shall know the meanings of these terms easily and readily.

As for the ambiguity of some words or even terms, it has roots and reasons that lead to that ambiguity. The result is so obvious when you see that question is being highly repeated in these days and the number of writers and lexicologists who speak about such an issue which is not the subject matter here.

It is well known that words have general linguistic meaning, but that linguistic meaning is limited when such a word is used in one of the sciences and bears a special idiomatic usage that makes it difficult to non-specialists to understand. There are many examples to that, such as the word "current" which I mentioned.

Dear brother,
In linguistics, The word "Tayyar" is derived from  "T.I.R", and it was reported in "Mukhtar Al-Sihah" that the meaning of  "current" is "waves" and doing the same thing again and again i.e., one time after another. As for the plural form of the word, it is "Tarat" and "TIR".

The word "current" is used to indicate other meanings that are different from the linguistic meaning even if they depend on it. For instance, the electric current is the flow of electronic charges in the electronic circuit and the unit of measurement is the Ampere. The political current is the bond that gathers or assembles the people who have special ideas, vision, clear targets, common work, organized committees, active cadre in streets, declared statement, spokesperson, an organized administrative scheme, unified motto, a well-known representative, and other forms of the considered currents. There are also the intellectual current, the Islamic current, the economic current, and others.

There are many systematic ways enable you to know the correct meaning of a word or a term:
Firstly, the encompassment of the general linguistic meaning that will give you many of the general meanings and implications.

Secondly, the neutral look of the word because many of these words are understood and known at first sight through the cultural of the recipients.

Thirdly, knowing the field of specialty in which this term or this word is used.

Fourth, asking the specialists of this science in order to know the full truth and encompass the term properly.

Now, thanks to Allah, there are, in almost all sciences, lexicons for the terms of this science to explain the meaning of its vocabularies to the extent that there is almost common known knowledge to spread these lexicons on the Internet to make it easy for the recipients to know these terms easily.

Al Alukah reminds you of some of these lexicons and books that you may refer to in specifying the terms that you want in addition to the well-known linguistic books and Arabic lexicons:
• Mu`jam Ghara'ib Al Lughah — Husayn Ali Lubany Al-Damuny, Mu'asasit Al Antishar Al-`Arby, first edition, 2008.

• Mu`jam Mustalahat Al computer Wal Internet Wal Ma`lumatiyyah — Dr. Sherif Fahmy Badawy, Dar Al Kitab Al Libnany for printing, publishing, and distribution, first edition, 2007.

• Mu`jam Al Mustalahat Al Athariyyah — Yahya Al-Shihaby, Lebanon Library, distributors, first edition, dateless.
