Question

Peace be upon you.

I want to reach the stage of trust — with Allah’s willing — to eliminate fear, therefore I want to know which Surahs are to be recited everyday and their virtues?

Answer

Praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.

The stimulus of worry have many reasons, and the summary of all is: they are often related to the fear of the unknown or the future, such as the fear of a student from the exam, the fear of parents for their children when they get sick, and the fear of death.

Concern is commendable and desirable when a person uses to do righteous actions and to be condemned when a person uses to exceed the limits or it hinders a person from work and diligence.

Anxiety can be treated by many ways, such as:
1 — Relying on Allah and be sure that nothing will befall a person except it is decreed by Allah. Allah, the Almighty says: “Say: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allâh has ordained for us.” [Surat At-Tawbah: 51]. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): “O boy! I will instruct you in some matters. Be watchful of Allah (Commandments of Allah), He will preserve you. Safeguard His Rights, He will be ever with you. If you beg, beg of Him Alone; and if you need assistance, supplicate to Allah Alone for help. And remember that if all the people gather to benefit you, they will not be able to benefit you except that which Allah had foreordained (for you); and if all of them gather to do harm to you, they will not be able to afflict you with anything other than that which Allah had pre-destined against you. The pens had been lifted and the ink had dried up.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhy and others].

2 — Treating people kindly in sayings and actions, thereby Allah pushes away concern and worry and a believing person shall have the full reward in the world as well as in the Hereafter. Allah, the Almighty says: “There is no good in most of their secret talks save (in) him who orders Sadaqah (charity in Allâh’s Cause), or Ma‘rûf (Islâmic Monotheism and all the good and righteous deeds which Allâh has ordained), or conciliation between mankind; and he who does this, seeking the good Pleasure of Allâh, We shall give him a great reward.” [Surat An-Nisa: 114].

3 — Engaging oneself in work or science because engaging oneself in useful actions turns away engaging in things that do not benefit. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Make your tongue mention Allah frequently.” [Reported by Ahmad and others].
This means the frequent concern of mentioning Allah confines thinking of anything else but Him.

4 — Keeping to the Shar`y Adhkar (invocations and Remembrances said at certain times on a regular basis) that reported in the Qur’an or in the Sunnah because Adhkar is a reason for the tranquility of the heart. Allah (Glory be to Him) says: “Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh? Islâmic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allâh: verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest.” [Surat Ar-Ra`d: 28].

There is no doubt that reciting the Qur’an is one of the best acts of worship and Adhkar that a person should keep to and occupy himself with. Allah (Glory be to Him) says: “Say: “It is for those who believe, a guide and a healing.” [Surat Fussilat: 44]. He also says: “I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.” [Surat Nuh: 10 - 12].

5 — Giving concern to everyday actions and stop fearing of the future. Al Bukhari and Muslim have reported from the Hadith of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sought refuge from worry and grief when he said: “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men.” Grief for the past actions that cannot be restored and worry that occurs because of the fear of the future.

6 — Sending frequent peace and blessings to the Prophet (peace be upon him). At-Tufayl ibn `Ubay ibn Ka`b narrated on the authority of his father who said: When two-thirds of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to get up and call out, "O people, remember Allah. The Rajifah (i.e., the first Blowing of the Trumpet which will shake the whole universe and thus cause all life to cease) has come, followed by Ar-Radifah (i.e., the second Blowing of the Trumpet which will restore life and thus mark the Resurrection Day). Death has approached with all that it comprises. Death has approached with all that it comprises.'' I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I frequently invoke Allah to elevate your rank. How much of my supplications should I devote to you?'' He said, "You may devote as much as you wish.'' When I suggested a quarter, he said, "Do whatever you wish, but it will be better for you if you increase it.'' I suggested half, and he said, "Do whatever you wish, but it will be better for you if you increase.'' I suggested two-thirds, and he said, "Do whatever you wish but it will be better for you if you increase it.'' I said, "Shall I devote all my supplications invoking Allah to elevate your rank?'' He said, "Then you will be freed from your worries and your sins will be forgiven.'' [Reported by At-Tirmidhy, Ahmad, and others].

Al Mubarakfury said in his book "Tuhfat Al Ahwadhy": "How much of my supplications should I devote to you? i.e., instead of the supplication I do for myself.” said Al Qary. Al Mundhiry said in his book “Al Targhib Wa At-Tarhib": The meaning is: Supplicate Allah frequently, how much should I devote of my supplication for sending peace and blessing to you?"

As for the Surah that should be recited everyday, it was reported in the Qur’an and the Sunnah the exhortation to recite the whole volume the Qur’an and warning against abandoning it, such as Allah’s saying: “And I am commanded to be from among the Muslims (those who submit to Allâh in Islâm). And that I should recite the Qur’ân.” [Surat An-Naml: 91 - 92]. Allah (Glory be to Him) says: “Recite (O Muhammad peace be upon him) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Qur’ân), and perform As-Salât (Iqamât-as-Salât).” [Surat Al `Ankabut: 45]. Allah, the Almighty says: “And the Messenger (Muhammad peace be upon him) will say: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur’ân (neither listened to it, nor acted on its laws and teachings).” [Surat Al Furqan: 30].

Thus, these verses command people to recite the entire volume of the Qur'an and warn against its abandonment. There was an exhortation to the recitation of other Surahs, such as Al Fatihah, Al Baqarah, Al `Imran, Al Kahf, Al Kafirun, Al Ikhlas, Al Mu`awizatayn, and others.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, Al Baqarah and Surat Al `Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surat Al Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it. (Mu`awiyah said: It has been conveyed to me that here Batala means magicians.)” [Reported by Muslim in his Sahih].

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in another Hadith: “It is sufficient for one to recite the last two Verses of Surat-Al Baqara at night.” [Reported by Al Bukhari and Muslim from the Hadith of Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him)].

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said about Surat Al Fatihah: “By Him in Whose Hands my life is, there is nothing was revealed in the Torah, in the bible, and in the Qur’an of the like; it is the seven oft-repeated verses (Al Mathani) and is the Great Qur’an (i.e. Surat-Al Fatiha) that I have been given.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhy and the origin of the Hadith is reported in Al Bukhari on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)].

Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also said: “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that "Alif, Laam, Meem" is a letter, rather I am saying that "Alif" is a letter, "laam" is a letter, and "meem" is a letter.” [An authentic Hadith that was reported by At-Tirmidhy].

AT-Tirmidhy reported on the authority of Ibn `Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said about Surat Al Mulk: “It is the preventer and the rescuer from the torment of the grave.” [Authenticated by Al Albany in his series of authentic Hadiths]. Another Hadith states: “There is a Surah in the Qur'an which contains thirty Ayat which kept interceding for a man until his sins are forgiven. This Surah is `Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion.' (Surat Al Mulk 67).'” [Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhy who graded it as authentic, and Al Albany who graded it as authentic too].

Imam Ahmad and At-Tirmidhy reported on the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not sleep until he recited Suart As-Sajdah and Surat Al Mulk. [Al Albany graded it as authentic].
Another Hadith was reported in the virtue of reciting Surat Al Waqi`ah every night, but it is not authentic.

It is a Sunnah to keep to reciting the Surah that were exhorted to recite every night as we mentioned, however if you want to recite other Surahs, you may do so because you are commanded to recite the entire volume of the Qur’an because it is full of good.

We ask Allah to grant you and us success for what He loves.
