Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!).

Yesterday night, 22/10/2010, I was listening to the Qur'anic recitation of Cairo Quran Radio station when they broadcasted a rare record for Sheikh Ibrahim Ash-Shi`sha`y during which he recited Surat Ya Sin.

However, I was stunned when he said: "And We have put a barrier before them, and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them up, so that they cannot see." where the reciter pronounced the word "Aghshaynahum" with `Ayn instead of Ghayn "A`shaynahum" in spite that I had memorized since my young age with Ghayn.

He repeated the Ayah twice with the same wording, so I opened a copy of the Qur'an to check the Ayah and I found all copies in Ghayn "Aghshaynahum" [Surat Ya Sin: 9].

I searched the Qur'an websites on the net and found also the word "Aghshaynahum."

Are there some mistakes in the recitations we hear in the radio? Could you kindly advise?

All praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Answer

Having briefed your question, I was terribly stunned and asked myself:

How could that be: a famous reciter like Ash-Shi`sha`y recites that word with that irregular recitation? No one of the Ten Reciters has ever read Allah's Saying: "Aghshaynahum " [Surat Ya Sin: 9] with `Ayn although it was the recitation of Al Hasan Al Basry (may Allah bestow mercy upon his soul) which was one of the four irregular recitations. It is well-known that scholars have agreed that the Ten Recitations are frequently transmitted and people use them in recitation while other recitations are irregular and people do not use them in recitations. Most scholars have agreed to the impermissibility of using these irregular recitations even if their chains of transmissions are authentic because scholars have not agreed to that.

Ibn As-Salah said in "Al Burhan Fi `Ulum Al Qur'an" (The Proof to Qur'anic Sciences) (p. 332) and "Manahil Al `Irfan Fi `Ulum Al Qur'an" (24): It is stipulated that the used recitation should be transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and many people reported it and the whole nation accepted it such as these seven recitations because they are based on certainty. Moreover, anyone uses irregular recitations should be stopped after explaining the matter to him."

It is impossible for that famous reciter to recite that word with `Ayn, so I had to listen to the Ayah from him so that I can figure out the problem. After some search, I found the record from the beginning of Surat Fatir, Ayah No. 38 until Ayah No. 27 of Surat Ya Sin, recorded in 1979.

After listening to the Ayahs, it seemed that the Sheikh had a birth defect -Allah knows best- in uttering Ghayn, therefore the letter did not come out properly. In fact, the Sheikh recited it as Ghayn but it was not clear to the one who did not listen carefully. That seemed obvious when I listen to the previous word "Aghlala" [Surat Ya Sin: 8] where Ghayn was not clear and near to the exit of `Ayn which caused ambiguity.

We ask Allah to grant us all forgiveness and pardon.
