Question

As-salamu `Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!).

Unfortunately, I have not read the Qur'an a long time ago and I only memorize few parts of it. I would like to change my conditions and start to recite the Qur'an regularly, perfect this recitation and show submissiveness when reciting it. I want to think about the meaning of the Qur'an during its recitation, feel the meanings of the Ayahs, and connect them with my daily life. Could you help me and provide me with some addresses and phone numbers of Qur'an memorization centers in the eastern region — Al Khubar? I would love to join one these if I can and even if I cannot, I can memorize it by my own.

Answer

Praise be to Allah and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.

Anyone wants to memorize and think about the Qur'an has to understand its meaning while he is memorizing and focusing on the act according to its meanings. It is possible to seek help with an abridged book on Tafsir. Anyone wants to enjoy the recitation and listening to the Qur'an should adhere to piety by abandoning sins because they waste righteous acts and cause solitude in the heart which will be a barrier between a person and memorization, thinking, and acting.

First, a person should test his ability of memorization then decide the daily amount to memorize. It is possible that a person assigns for himself half a page per day which nearly five-long Ayahs or 10 short Ayahs, or to fix one page every day. The Glorious Qur'an is 604 pages which means if a person is keen to memorize the Qur'an, he will memorize it in two years. The most important matter is not to press yourself for fear of boredom because that will cause interruption, but one should continue even if a person memorizes three or one Ayah in his free time. Furthermore, a memorizer should recite what he has memorized at a well-versed sheikh or a good reciter because the Qur'an is received by direct teaching. However, if it is possible, you should listen to the Ayahs which you would like to memorize by any way from a sheikh who recites in clear and slow voice like the recitation of Al Mushaf Al Mu`allim of Al Husary or other reciters; today Qur'an teaching devices are abundant and available, thanks to Allah.

You should start listening and following up a reciter while looking at the letters in the Qur'an, then repeats again while reciting with the sheikh. Then you should start memorizing by repetition, understanding the meanings, and linking Ayahs with one another. In the following day, you should listen to the page you have memorized and if you memorized it well move to the next page and follow the same method. This entails that you fix a portion of the Qur'an to recite daily, for example, if you memorized one part, revise two pages every day until you finish then go back again and again. When you memorize ten parts of the Qur'an, revise at least half a part per day; if you want to increase the portion, it will be better but do not decrease it. When the amount of memorization becomes bigger, the amount of revision should increase, so a person shall have a daily portion to memorize and a daily portion for revision. Whoever memorizes the whole volume of the Qur'an should revise one part each day and with frequent revision, it becomes easy and light.

When a student walks in such a way, Allah facilitates things for him, opens his heart, helps him, and prepares someone to help and teach him until a person achieves what he loved for himself or even better. How would not be the case like this while the Qur'an is a cure for the hearts?! We have to seek help from Allah and observe patience because whoever has the intention to do so Allah will help him, and you can ask those who have tried and you shall hear amazing stories.

There are many written books in how to memorize the Qur'an by many methods such as setting a useful program for memorization, moreover you should know and study the rulings of Tajwid (art of Qur'anic recitation) even if you begin with short notes.

Of the matters that help a person to think in the Qur'an are the following:

Submissiveness upon reciting the Glorious Qur'an by thinking and reflection, good recitation and nice voice, recitation during the voluntary Night Salah, and moderate recitation between loud tone and lower tone. So, anyone listens to it by mind and thinks about with heart will find its sweetness in his heart and benefit from, in addition to the great reward he shall be given for reciting the Glorious Qur'an.

We ask Allah (may He be Exalted) to help and guide every person walks in such a way, and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad.
