Question

As-Salamu `Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and Blessings be upon you!)

I am a young man who has not reached twenty years yet. I have a mobile on which there are software for the Qur'an and Adhkar (invocations and Remembrances said at certain times on a regular basis), but sometimes Satan seduces me to watch porno scenes.

My question is: Am I a disbeliever for watching them? Am I profaning the book of Allah by this action? If I am a disbeliever what is the way to salvation?

Every time I regret this action, fear for my religion, and fear to go out of my religion, but after a while, I renew my faith.

I hope you guide and advise me; may Allah reward you the best.

Answer

All praise be to Allah, and peace be upon His Messenger, upon his family, his Companions, and those who follow him.

Watching porno scenes is prohibited by all means, and its danger lies in opening the gate of evil wide until one's soul asks for adultery; and from this part, it may lead to major sins or more.

As for logging into these sites from a device that contains the Glorious Qur'an, it does not change the ruling. Although the action is ugly and disapproved, it is not part of apostasy or aversion from Islam, and it does not resemble those who dishonored the Book of Allah (may He be Exalted).

As for the penance of that disgraceful action, it is sincere repentance, asking for Allah's Forgiveness, regretting falling into sin, and making up one's mind not to repeat the action again. If he does so, repentance shall be accepted by the permission of Allah, but if he repeated it again, he must repent again and so on provided that in the time of repentance, he should not have an intention to repeat the action, so the presence of such intention violates repentance. Insistence itself is an independent guilt that turns minor sins major as the Scribe of the Muslim Nation and the interpreter of the Qur'an, `Abdullah ibn `Abbas, said: (There is no major sin with forgiveness, and there is no minor sin with insistence).

As for repeating the guilt every time after repentance and regret, it has a reason which Shaykh-ul-Islam explained in Majmu` Al Fatawa (16/ 58), he said: "Sincere repentance should be free of all fraud, and if it is sincere and a person repeats the sin again, it is because of its remnant in his heart. So, whoever gets rid of doubt and lust shall never repeat guilt again. This sincere repentance is obligatory according to the command of Allah (may He be Exalted). If a person repents then repeats the guilt, Allah will accept his first repentance, but if he repeats the guilt, he shall deserve punishment, and if he repents sincerely to Allah, Allah will forgive him. It is not permissible for a Muslim to insist on the guilt if he repents then repeats the guilt again, but he must repent even if he violates repentance one hundred times. Imam Ahmad reported in his Musnad on the authority of Ali that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (Verily, Allah loves a servant who is tempted but repentant).

In another Hadith: There is no minor sin with insistence and no major sin with forgiveness).

In another Hadith: (The one who seeks forgiveness does not insist on a guilt even if he violates repentance one hundred times).

Ibn Al Jawzy said in Al Mudhish (p. 161): O so and so, work for your religion as you work for your world. When a nail hangs with your garment, you go back to get rid of it. This is the nail of harms that may be attached with your heart, and if you go back two steps to regret, you shall get rid of it.

The following matters shall help you get rid of logging into these sites:

* Attentiveness of the heart and activate reasoning when lusts cover it, and think about the consequences of matters such as the misfortune of the sin and the alienation of the heart after committing the sin.

Reasoning is given priority because it reflects on consequences, whereas those who lack reasoning look at their present conditions not their consequences. A thief thinks about taking money not cutting of the hand. A free man looks at the pleasure of comfort and forgets the lack of knowledge and money, and when he grows up, he asks about knowledge and when he asks, he shall become humiliated.

A wine drinker enjoys wine and forgets the evils it brings in the world and in the Hereafter, and likewise adulterer who thinks about lusts and forgets the scandal of the world and the Prescribed Punishment of the Hereafter, says Ibn Al Jawzy in Sayd Al Khatir (p. 486).

* Punctuality to things that protect from and expel Satan such as Ayatul-Kursy, so whoever recites it before sleep, devils shall not approach him. Whoever recites the last Ayahs of Surat Al Baqarah, they will be sufficient for him. Frequent repeating of "La Ilaha Illa Allah Wahdahu La Sharika Lah, Lahul-Mulk Walahul-Hamd, Wahuwa `Ala Kulli Shay'in Qadir [one hundred times in the morning and in the evening], they will be a protection for him from Satan his entire day. The greatest protection for a person is to recite Al Ma`udhatayn where the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: "I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing from the accursed Satan, from his evil suggestion (hamz), from his puffing up (nafkh), and from his blowing (nafth)." [The beginning of Surat As-Safat and the end of Surat Al Hashr].

* Trying to increase faith by frequent punctuality on righteous deeds. Man does not do forbidden acts except for the weakness of his faith and for loving forbidden matters, and when he commits reprehensible matters, he does them for the weakness of his faith or for loving them too much. Man does not commit something forbidden such as fornications, sins, associating others with Allah in worship except for the weakness of his faith or the lack of knowledge. However, if the origin of faith is sound, these forbidden actions are done for the overwhelming lusts and he must hate these actions while committing them and fear the punishment of Allah. Moreover, he should hope for getting rid of them by repentance, good deeds, pardon, or something of the like. If he does not hate these actions, fear Allah, and hope for Allah's Mercy, he is not a believer but a disbeliever or a hypocrite. [Shaykhul-Islam in Qa`idah fi Al Mahabbah, p. 104].

* Fearing Allah which is the highest rank of religion as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not achieve this state of devotion, then (take it for granted that) Allah sees you." So, a person must be sure that Allah (Glory be to Him) watches over him and hears what he says, and whoever fears Allah, Allah protects him of falling into forbidden actions.

* The one who believes in Allah and in the Last Day loves what Allah and His Messenger love and forbids what Allah and His Messenger hate. Whoever does not believe in Allah and the Last Day, he follows his whims. Allah says: "And who is more astray than one who follows his own lusts." [Surat Al Qasas: 50]. Adultery is one of the major sins, but looking and touching are minor sins and forgiven as long as a person avoids major sins, but if a person insists on looking or touching, they will become major and may become more serious than many major sins, for looking and touching with lust is more grievous than adultery committed once. Therefore, jurists said about a just witness: Not to commit a major sin or insist on a minor sin. It was reported in the Hadith: (There is no minor sin with insistence and no major sin with forgiveness). Looking and touching may lead a person to polytheism as Allah (Glory be to Him) says: "And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allâh as rivals (to Allâh). They love them as they love Allâh." [Surat Al Baqarah: 165]. Therefore, loving of pictures comes from the lack of loving Allah and the weakness of faith as Allah narrated in the Qur'an about the wife of Al `Aziz and about the people of Lut who become slaves to their beloved. [Shaykhul-Islam ibn Taymiyah, Majmu` Al Fatawa (15/292 - 293).

May Allah guide you to all good.
