Invoking Allah when a dialogue reaches a dead end

(speculations in the dialogue of Surat Yusuf)

It means: Resorting to Allah (may He be Exalted) with invocation and seeking His Help when the dialogue reaches a dead end.

There is no doubt that Du`a (supplication) is part of worship, and one of the most important things that draw nearer to Allah (may He be Exalted). Moreover, it is one of the powerful weapons which a caller to Allah uses, so when the dialogue reaches a dead end with the other party, you should resort to Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) with invocation, hope, and seeking help. By invocation, man worships his lord, fulfills his need, gets what he wants, and achieves the satisfaction of the Lord (may He be Glorified and Exalted).

The examples of this etiquette are crystal clear in the story or the Surah of Joseph (peace be upon him):

1- Allah's Saying on tongue of His Prophet Jacob: "He said: Nay, but your ownselves have made up a tale. So (for me) patience is most fitting. And it is Allâh (Alone) Whose help can be sought against that (lie) which you describe." [Surat Yusuf: 18].

When the brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) brought his shirt stained in blood and Jacob was not convinced with their story, he said the previous invocation at the end of his dialogue with his sons. In this invocation, he sought help with Allah against their lie and told them that he derives his patience, power, and strength from Allah (Glory be to Him).

2- Allah's Saying on the tongue of His Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him): "He said: O my Lord! Prison is dearer to me than that to which they invite me. Unless You turn away their plot from me, I will feel inclined towards them and be one (of those who commit sin and deserve blame or those who do deeds) of the ignorant." [Surat Yusuf: 33].

Here, Joseph ended his dialogue with the wife of the `Aziz and her friends with invoking Allah against their evil and deception. He invoked his Lord with entering prison rather than fulfilling their wishes of adultery. Then he said: If You do not turn away their plot from me, I will feel inclined towards them and be on of the ignorant. So, Allah (Glory be to Him) responded to Joseph and turned away the plot of the wife of the `Aziz and her friends, therefore Allah said: "So his Lord answered his invocation, and turned away from him their plot. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower." [Surat Yusuf: 34].

As-Sa`dy (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) said: A person should resort to Allah and seek His Protection when he approaches the causes of committing a sin, and he should free himself of his power and strength and direct them to Allah because of the saying of Joseph (peace be upon him): "Unless You turn away their plot from me, I will feel inclined towards them and be one (of those who commit sin and deserve blame or those who do deeds) of the ignorant." [Surat Yusuf: 33].[As-Sa`dy, Taysir Al Karim Ar-Rahman, p. 409].

3- Allah said about the dialogue that took place between Jacob and his sons when they wanted to take their brother Joseph: "He said: Can I entrust him to you except as I entrusted his brother [Yûsuf (Joseph)] to you aforetime? But Allâh is the Best to guard, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy." [Surat Yusuf: 64].

So, he told them about his trust that Allah would protect their brother and would bring him back to him.

4- Allah says about the dialogue that took place between Jacob and his sons when he said to them: "He [Ya'qûb (Jacob)] said: Nay, but your ownselves have beguiled you into something. So patience is most fitting (for me). May be Allâh will bring them (back) all to me. Truly He! Only He is All-Knowing, the All-Wise." [Surat Yusuf: 83]. So, he invoked Allah to bring back his three children: Joseph, his younger brother [Benjamin], and his elder brother.

5- Allah said on the tongue of Jacob: "He said: I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allâh, and I know from Allâh that which you know not." [Surat Yusuf: 86].

6- Jacob said to his sons: "He said: I will ask my Lord for forgiveness for you, verily, He! Only He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful." [Surat Yusuf: 98].

When they repented to Allah and asked for His Forgiveness, their father said to them: I shall invoke my Lord to forgive your sins.
